Every summer, families across the U.S. open their homes to international coaches from Challenger Sports, turning a week of soccer camp into something much more meaningful — a cultural exchange, a family memory, and often, the beginning of a lifelong friendship.

At Challenger Sports, we believe in the power of connection. Yes, we coach soccer — but what we really do is help kids grow, build confidence, and create global friendships. Our international coaching staff, primarily from the United Kingdom and Europe, but also occasionally from further afield, don’t just teach soccer drills. They share stories, cook favorite meals from back home, play backyard games, and become honorary family members, even if only for a week. Our team also includes North American based staff who are looking to travel and expand their experience on their own continent.

Hosting a Challenger Coach: A Unique Opportunity

Coach giving players a thumbs up

Each year, hundreds of coaches travel to the U.S. to lead our weeklong soccer camps. During that time, they stay with host families in the communities they serve. For many families, this is the highlight of their summer.

“Gemma was a fantastic guest. She is easygoing and appreciative. My girls really enjoyed the opportunity to host her — and we don’t want her to leave!”
— Ella D.

“This has been the best experience. Henley has been an absolute joy. He’s so polite and engaging with our family. Our children have just fallen in love with him.”
— The Mense Family

“We enjoyed having Duncan join us for the week. He was a great conversationalist at dinner and loved telling us about his homeland, Scotland. My little girl absolutely adored him!”
— Jamie T.

These aren’t isolated stories. We receive countless emails every year from families who are surprised by how impactful just one week can be. Many keep in touch with their coach long after they’ve gone, exchanging holiday cards, WhatsApp messages, and even planning future visits across the globe.

How Does Hosting Work?

When you sign up for a Challenger Sports camp, you’ll typically be asked if you're interested in hosting one of our coaches. Our regional team then checks your local area to see if we’re in need of host families. Even if your child isn’t attending the camp, you can still be a host — and you’re more than welcome to apply through our host family membership group anytime during the year.

As a thank-you, host families receive either a free Challenger Sports day camp or a $100 rebate. But for most families, the real reward is the connection they build with someone from a different part of the world — all without leaving their own home.

And if you’ve ever thought, I wish this cultural exchange could last longer, there’s good news: it can.

Happy coach with young soccer summer campers

Taking Cultural Exchange a Step Further: Hosting with YFU

Our partner, Youth For Understanding (YFU USA), makes it possible to extend the kind of connections made during a weeklong soccer camp into something even deeper and more transformative — by hosting an international high school student for a longer period of time.

Whether you’re new to hosting or have done it before with Challenger Sports, YFU offers a variety of hosting options to match your lifestyle and comfort level. Just like with our coaching program, YFU families often describe their experience as life-changing.

Here’s a breakdown of the different types of hosting you can explore with YFU:

Full Academic Year Hosting

The most traditional and immersive form of hosting, this experience runs from August through June. During this time, your family shares everything from back-to-school excitement and Thanksgiving dinners to prom season and high school graduation.

You’ll have the chance to truly bond with your student, watch them grow academically and socially, and share in everyday moments that become treasured memories.

Winter Year Hosting

This unique model is designed around the academic calendars of many South American countries, with students arriving in January and staying until December. It’s a great option for families who might have more flexibility or who enjoy hosting during spring and summer.

Semester Hosting

Not sure about committing to a full year? Hosting for just the fall or spring semester gives your family the opportunity to dip your toes into the hosting experience. It’s perfect for busy households or first-time hosts looking to explore if long-term hosting is a good fit.

Arrival Family Hosting

YFU’s Arrival Families host international students for up to 12 weeks, helping them settle in as local coordinators find a long-term placement. This type of hosting plays a vital role in easing a student’s transition and can often lead to a longer-term bond — some Arrival Families even choose to become the student’s permanent hosts.

Emergency Hosting

Life happens, and sometimes an exchange student’s host placement needs to change quickly. Emergency Host Families step in to provide a safe, supportive environment while a new permanent host is located. This option is best for experienced hosts who are comfortable navigating unexpected changes.

Specialty Short-Term Hosting

If you love the short-term hosting experience with Challenger Sports but want to try something different, YFU offers specialty short-term programs. One standout example is the USA For You program, which provides a few weeks of cultural immersion for students from around the world.

Challenger Sports is proud to be featured in this category. Through our partnership with YFU, we support both short-term hosting of adult coaches and help pave the way for families to explore longer-term opportunities with teens.

Why It Matters

Whether you're hosting a soccer coach for a week or welcoming a teenager into your home for a year, you're doing more than just providing a bed and meals — you're changing lives. You're giving someone the chance to experience American culture firsthand, to improve their language skills, and to feel the warmth of family thousands of miles from home.

In return, you and your family gain a deeper understanding of the world, new traditions, and friendships that often span years — even decades. In many ways, hosting is one of the most rewarding things a family can do, and it all starts with saying yes.

Ready to Host?

Whether you're ready to open your doors for a week or a year, there’s a hosting opportunity that’s perfect for your family.

Challenger Sports, we’ve been bringing coaches across the Atlantic to deliver summer soccer camps in the U.S. and Canada for 40 years. Behind each coach is a journey — not just of miles, but of preparation, passion, and personal growth. A huge part of that journey begins every spring in Warwick, England, where we host our annual training weekend. And this year, that weekend returned to full form — two full days of learning, connecting, and getting ready for the summer of a lifetime.

A Weekend That Sets the Standard

The Warwick training event is the heartbeat of our summer preparations — a place where everything begins. It’s where our full-time U.S.-based staff, many of whom once made this same journey themselves, reunite with their roots and help shape the new wave of Challenger coaches.

This year’s event marked a return to a full two-day format. That meant more classroom sessions, more field time, and more opportunities to connect — not just as coaches, but as a team. From high-energy drills and coaching clinics to a lively Saturday social and our coach awards ceremony, this weekend offered everything our coaches need to hit the ground running.

Alan Jones, Challenger Sports COO and one of our founders, puts it best:

“So proud to be part of an organization that helps develop young coaches who in turn will help develop young players and pass on Challenger Sports’ passion for the game and education.”

Why This Weekend Matters

Coaching on a Challenger camp is about more than just soccer — it’s about Igniting The Passion in young players, creating unforgettable experiences, and representing the values that make our programs so impactful. The Warwick weekend is our opportunity to lay that foundation and ensure our team is ready — not just tactically, but personally and professionally.

What makes this experience special is that we’re preparing our coaches for something very different than their club environments back home. Coaching on a camp in the U.S. or Canada means embracing a higher level of enthusiasm, adapting to new cultures, and understanding that they’ll be role models both on and off the field.

That’s why we do what we do — to make sure our coaches are the right people, doing the right things, in the right way.

Kate Gedzielewski, Regional Director for the Rockies and the Great Plains (heading into her 10th Challenger summer), shared how important these connections are:

“My favorite part of this past weekend was the socializing on Saturday night with our summer coaches and seeing the impact of this on the Sunday. Coaches had come out of their shells and were now friends with each other, and you could see their confidence increase because of this!”

Building Skills, Confidence, and Culture

So how do we prepare coaches for such a unique summer? It’s all about balance — a mix of technical development, real-world preparation, and team bonding.

Classroom sessions focus on session planning, safeguarding, expectations, and understanding the Challenger way. On the field, our staff and senior coaches lead practical demonstrations, facilitate peer coaching, and provide valuable feedback in real time. Off the field, it’s about relationship-building — getting to know teammates, managers, and the company culture they’re about to represent.

This is where coaching meets mentorship. It’s where first-time staff are guided by returning coaches, and where bonds begin that will carry through the entire summer.

Ben Jeans, this year’s “Mel Davies Coach of the Year” award winner, captured it well:

“The training weekend was excellent and really beneficial for both new and returning coaches. It provided a better and more in-depth understanding of what our roles and responsibilities would be in the summer.”

“I’m personally most looking forward to making some more amazing memories and experiences this summer through Challenger Sports — from host families to huge amazing camps all in different environments across the US. A stand-out to me is working with some of my colleagues from the previous summer.”

Ben Beer, our Head of UK Recruitment, added:

“The 2025 Training Weekend was such a success because of the hard work and dedication of the Challenger Sports staff that ensured that the coaches attending were looked after, had fun and learnt — meaning that the best version of every individual will be working for Challenger Sports on and off the field.”

“It was also a success because of the coaches that attended — their openness and willingness to listen and learn and their hard work and enthusiasm, whether they be first-year coaches or returning coaches, impressed all members of staff and I’m sure will impress host families, the kids that they are coaching, and the parents watching.”

How It Helps Our Camps — and Our Coaches

For Challenger, this weekend isn’t just a tradition — it’s a vital piece of our quality promise.

It gives our full-time staff time to meet and bond with the coaches assigned to their regions. They get to see them coach, understand their personalities, and make thoughtful placements based on age group, ability, and camp style. It’s a chance to build equity, trust, and a shared sense of purpose before the summer even begins.

It also gives us confidence. When we speak to parents, partners, and camp organizers, we can speak with certainty. We know that the coaches we’re sending out are trained, motivated, and ready to deliver an unforgettable experience — not just for the players, but for the communities they become part of.

Most importantly, it means our campers get the best of the best. Coaches who have already walked the fields with their peers, shared stories, learned new styles, and laughed over common nerves. Coaches who understand that to work at a Challenger camp is to do more than coach — it’s to connect, to inspire, and to bring people together.

And it shows.

Ask anyone who’s walked those Warwick fields — there’s a special buzz in the air. You hear the whistles, the laughter, the quick shouts of encouragement. You see young coaches finding their feet, absorbing advice, and pushing each other to improve.

It’s hard work. But it’s great fun. And it’s the start of a summer that changes lives.

Love the Game, Learn the Game

At the heart of every Challenger camp is the reason we do this — the kids.

Our mission is to help young players fall in love with soccer while building foundational skills in a fun and safe environment. Our coaches are trained not just to instruct, but to inspire. Every session, every interaction, and every moment on the field is a chance to help our campers love the game and learn the game.

This training weekend ensures our coaches arrive in North America ready to deliver just that — high-energy sessions that are fun, inclusive, and engaging. By preparing our coaches with the tools, mindset, and cultural understanding they need, we’re able to give every camper an experience that’s as educational as it is exciting.

Because when kids love the game, they want to keep learning. And when they learn the game, they grow — not just as players, but as people.

Pay It Forward

Are you reading this as someone who has lived this experience — whether with Challenger Sports or another organization? Maybe you were a coach, a parent, or even a camper yourself?

If so, we’d love for you to help someone else experience it too. Share this post with one person who might want to know what Challenger Sports is all about. You never know — it might just kick off their summer of a lifetime.

Summer is the perfect time for kids to break free from the classroom, make new friends, and dive into activities that build lifelong skills. A summer soccer camp offers all of this and more, providing children with the opportunity to improve their athletic abilities, develop essential life skills, and have fun in a safe, active environment.

Whether your child is an aspiring soccer star or just looking for a way to stay active over the summer, soccer camps like those offered by Challenger Sports provide the perfect mix of learning and enjoyment. In this article, we'll explore the many benefits of summer soccer camps and how to make them more affordable for your family.

1. Developing Lifelong Skills Through Soccer Camp

Soccer camps are much more than just a way for kids to play their favorite sport. They’re an invaluable opportunity for children to develop a wide range of skills that will serve them well both on and off the field.

By focusing on teaching or building on the fundamentals of the game, kids can develop in a way that is both fun and engaging. They will learn or work on how to dribble, pass, shoot, and control the ball through a mix of drills, exercises, and games. As they improve their technical skills, they also develop valuable traits such as focus, perseverance, and discipline—qualities that are essential in every area of life.

One of the most significant benefits of attending a soccer camp is the development of teamwork. Soccer is a team sport, and players must learn how to cooperate with others to achieve a common goal. At camp, kids work together on the field, building trust and understanding with their teammates. This sense of cooperation extends beyond the game, teaching children how to collaborate with peers in other settings—whether it’s school, extracurricular activities, or future careers.

Additionally, soccer camps foster resiliency, helping kids bounce back from mistakes and learn how to handle challenges, both in the game and in life. These lessons go beyond the soccer field, providing kids with a strong foundation of problem-solving and adaptability.

2. The Health Benefits of Soccer Camps: Physical, Mental, and Social

Physical activity is crucial for children’s overall well-being, and soccer camps offer an excellent way for kids to stay active during the summer months. In today’s digital age, children are spending more time in front of screens than ever before. Research shows that too much screen time can lead to a range of issues, including disrupted sleep patterns, reduced reading time, and even negative effects on academic performance. Soccer camps, on the other hand, provide a fun, screen-free alternative that promotes physical health and mental sharpness.

By participating in soccer, kids are getting an effective workout while developing coordination, balance, and motor skills. The high-energy nature of soccer ensures that children stay fit and healthy, helping them develop strong muscles and improve cardiovascular health. This active environment promotes healthy living and encourages children to make physical activity a regular part of their routine.

Additionally, soccer camps foster social interaction, helping kids form lasting friendships. By spending time with peers who share similar interests, children build strong social skills and expand their circles of friendship. These connections can have a positive impact on a child’s self-esteem, as they gain confidence in their ability to interact with others and form bonds based on mutual respect and shared experiences.

3. Why Soccer Camp is Essential for Personal Growth and Independence

Beyond the physical and technical skills gained, summer soccer camps offer invaluable opportunities for personal growth. One of the most important aspects of soccer camp is the promotion of independence. Kids often spend long hours at camp without direct parental supervision, which encourages them to become more self-reliant and responsible for their actions. This autonomy builds confidence and helps children take pride in their achievements, both in soccer and in other areas of their lives.

Moreover, soccer camps provide children with the chance to make decisions on their own, whether it’s choosing which drills to focus on or deciding how to approach a new challenge on the field. This ability to problem-solve and think independently transfers to school and other activities, where children become more confident in taking initiative and thinking critically.

Another crucial life skill that soccer camps help foster is teamwork. Working together on the field, kids must communicate and collaborate to succeed. This teamwork builds trust, and children learn the importance of respecting others, even when facing challenges. The social aspect of camp teaches kids to value diversity and respect differences, which is essential for building healthy relationships and thriving in an increasingly interconnected world.

4. How to Afford Summer Soccer Camps: Making Camp a Reality for All Families

While summer soccer camps offer countless benefits, the cost of enrollment can be a barrier for some families. The good news is that there are several ways to make soccer camp more affordable, even in a tough economy.

One way to save on camp costs is to plan ahead and take advantage of early bird registration. At Challenger Sports, we offer discounts for families who sign up early, ensuring you get the best value while securing your child’s spot. Additionally, we more affordable half-day afternoon sessions for those who need a more budget-friendly option, allowing kids to enjoy all the fun of soccer camp without the higher cost of a full-day program.

For families who may be facing financial hardship, the Challenger Foundation offers scholarships and financial assistance to help ensure that every child has the opportunity to participate. More information can be found on our website.

Conclusion: Why Summer Soccer Camp Is the Best Investment for Your Child

Summer soccer camps provide kids with more than just an opportunity to play sports— they offer a chance to develop lifelong skills, improve physical and mental health, and build meaningful friendships. By learning teamwork, resilience, and independence, children not only become better soccer players but also grow into well-rounded individuals who are prepared to face life’s challenges.

At Challenger Sports, we pride ourselves on being more than just a soccer camp, and we’re committed to providing an experience that goes beyond soccer skills. Our camps focus on cultural engagement, promoting respect for differences, and fostering an environment where every child feels valued and supported. And with options to make camp affordable— such as early bird pricing and half-day afternoon sessions— participating in a soccer camp is more accessible than ever.

So, whether you’re looking to enrich your child’s summer or find an active and engaging way for them to stay busy, soccer camp is an excellent choice. Don’t miss the opportunity to give your child an unforgettable experience this summer— one that will leave them with lasting memories, new friends, and a stronger sense of self-confidence.

Challenger Soccer Camps have been running across North America for over 40 years. We asked Daniel Miller, ex Challenger Coach and current Challenger Vice- President to explore what makes the camps so special. Read on to hear what makes this experience so unique for kids, coaches, parents and Challenger staff across the globe.

If you’ve started to read this then you’re going to be someone who has either participated in a Challenger camp (as either a coach or a camper!), watched a Challenger soccer camp before OR PERHAPS you’re just someone who hopefully is curious to read on and hear what all the fuss is about!

Some brief background on myself- I am from the UK originally and came over to the States as a coach in ‘06 before joining the company as a full-time staff member in ‘08. So that’s the role of both coach and manager covered BUT 6 years ago I took on the most common role…..that of a parent of a Challenger camper.

My kids on each of their first ever camps and then that ‘after camp’ feeling on the drive home.

I’ve come full circle and hopefully that gives me a unique perspective on what has become the most attended soccer camp in North America. However given the size and reach of our camp program it would be short-sighted to merely give you my opinion, hence I’ve reached out to other coaches, colleagues and crucially fellow parents who have been kind enough to complete our end of camp surveys in the past. Thanks in advance if your words are added below and thanks to anyone else reading this who has attended a camp in the past…

What is a Challenger camp?

The concept of the Challenger camp was always pretty simple- bring coaches over from the UK and Ireland and distribute them all over the US and Canada to run week long day camps. A simple concept, but with a far-reaching effect and in the words of one of our most experienced staff Grant Hall (Denver, CO) we have produced:

“A wonderful social and cultural experience that makes it so much more than just a soccer camp”

Oh, and there’s been one slight change in recent years; we have expanded to include coaches from all over the world whilst really focusing in on the fundamentals needed to help grow the same from the base up, hence the name change several years ago from “British Soccer Camps” to how we are known today: “Foundational Skills Camps”.

On the field

The phrase ‘sessions for all ages and ability’ is something I have written a zillion times during my role with the company but it really is true. The ability to work with and coach the individual child in a group setting was the first thing I learnt- I’ll never forget my debut in Fort Wayne, IN- and as a manager you know that whatever age or ability level you have each week on your camps, you’ll be able to find the right coach from our wide and hugely impressive range of staff.

Nowhere is the unique skill set of the Challenger coach more on display than when they are working with our youngest age group, TinyTykes (ages 3-5) , as is shown by the comments of Desirae from VT:

“Coach Sal and Coach Rez were so kind and patient with these young campers. They were especially helpful and encouraging to my son, which I greatly appreciated. He barely turned three two weeks before the program started, and he has never done anything like this before. He wouldn’t have been as successful without their help!”

TinyTykes Young Children Learning Basic Soccer Skills

It’s a camper’s enthusiasm and pure love for the game that we foster at such a young age that leads to many of them ‘’graduating'’ to the most popular half day group (ages 6+). It’s here where the true impact of what we do (excuse the pun) kicks in….

"What I love about the Foundational Skills Camps is the diversity of play. I talk to my children so much about learning many different styles and having them in your tool belt. My son also loves the World cup which is a great way to finish each day of camp and incorporate the international flavor of the game" (Alex Green, Company VP/Father, Providence, RI)

Additionally we understand the needs of a working parent in the summer (I truly do now I have my own kids!) and therefore offer both a Full Day Program as well asan extended day “Overtime” option. All sessions include a ball and a jersey. We continue to update our curriculum to keep it modern and relevant and one of the team responsible for that, Kate Gedzielewski (Denver, CO) believes that we will continue to offer “a combination of age appropriate activities for players to hone their technique and skills in a fun and challenging learning environment"” as part of our “holistic camp experience”.

Coach teaching on a Foundational Skills Camp

Off the field

I feel like this is the KEY part of this article….the stuff on the field that we’ve covered above makes us great, but it’s the stuff off the field that truly sets us apart

Put simply, it’s more than JUST a soccer camp.

Thanks to Paula from NM who summed this up nicely for us:

“Super happy with the camp. When we started my child was not so enthusiastic about soccer. By the end he said that was the best camp he ever attended! He had a wonderful time, learned soccer skills but also sportsmanship. Great balance between learning skills, playing games and coming together as a whole group. I am really impressed.”

Analyzing that, I believe that there’s one ingredient that all of our staff need to create that kind of feedback…..and that’s passion. Passion for the game, passion for education and also a passion to drip feed a little cultural exchange into a day camp setting.

As alluded to earlier, we started out as a “British” coaching staff but the switch to include coaches from quite literally all over the world has only enhanced the off the field enthusiasm our staff create, resulting in kids going home wanting to do their “soccer homework” and return the next day to earn those magical World Cup Points. I challenge other camp companies to provide feedback like that provided by Whitney from TX or Ruschelle from KS, below, which shows how we bring everything together to extend the education process beyond the field:

“Our director (Coach T from Sri Lanka) was fantastic. The “homework” every night was fun and motivated my kids to stay involved. Easy checking/out. Friendly, communicative, fun, in control.”

“The two coaches were fantastic with the children, and through the camp my kids fell more in love with the sport while also learning about other cultures.”

Foundational Skills Camp Running Fun with Flags

Our mission statement is to ‘ignite the passion’ and perhaps our proudest achievement is the knowledge that most kids will keep playing once our staff have left town. My eldest son has done 6 years on camp now and every year he’ll be talking about the other kids and coaches on camp with such familiarity and excitement as if he’s known them all his life. That feeling of belonging to a ‘camp community’ is exactly what summers for our kids should be all about!

As the holiday season approaches, we’re taking a moment to reflect on how much we’ve grown over the past 40 years. Since 1985, Challenger Sports has been committed to providing kids with incredible soccer experiences—building skills, confidence, and lasting memories. As we look ahead to summer 2025, we’re excited to kick things off early with an anniversary celebration that gives back to the families who’ve helped us reach this milestone.

We believe that this holiday season is the perfect time to not only start planning for next summer but also to show our appreciation for the families who’ve been part of the Challenger Sports community. So, here’s what’s different this year and how we’re celebrating 40 years of running amazing soccer camps!

Why We’re Encouraging Parents to Plan for Summer Early

Every summer, we serve over 30,000 kids across our various soccer camps, and we know that many parents want to be prepared well in advance. Whether you’re booking a family vacation, planning for work, or simply looking to keep your kids active and engaged, securing your spot at one of our camps early helps avoid last-minute stress.

Last year, we heard from parents who wished they had more time to plan. They wanted to know about camp dates earlier and secure their child's place in our popular programs before they filled up. That’s exactly why we’re launching early registration for our 2025 summer camps now. By planning ahead, you not only get the best possible pricing but also lock in a spot at one of our well-loved camps, whether it's Foundational Skills Camps, Creative Skills Camps, TinyTykes or Elite Camps.

The Perfect Holiday Gift: Experience and Memories Await

Looking for a meaningful gift this holiday season? We’ve got you covered! Giving the gift of soccer camp is about more than just signing up— it’s about providing your child with an experience that will build their skills, confidence, and love for the game. And the best part? It’s easy to give!

This holiday season, when you sign up for one of our week-long camps, you’ll receive a digital confirmation email with a downloadable “You’re Going to Soccer Camp” certificate. This certificate is a fun, personalized way to surprise your child and lets them know about the exciting summer adventure ahead. It’s simple, it’s meaningful, and it costs us nothing but a little time to set up— making it the perfect last-minute gift.

Plus, registering early means securing your child’s spot at one of our most popular camps— so you’ll avoid the frustration of waiting until the last minute and scrambling to find a place.

Celebrating 40 Years: Our Biggest Holiday Giveaway Yet

2025 marks our 40th anniversary of running summer camps, and we’re kicking off the celebrations with a Holiday Loyalty Launch that’s designed to give something back to the families who’ve supported us over the years. By signing up before January 1st, you’ll be eligible for some exciting rewards:

  • Digital Raffle for 40 Free Camp Scholarships

A child’s formative years, from birth to age eight, are arguably the most important developmental years of their life. The exposure and experiences that children receive during these early years can actually have a life-lasting impact on their success later in life. Introducing sports, including soccer, at a young age offers numerous benefits that contribute to a child's physical, mental, and social development. Here are some of the key reasons why it's important:

Physical health: Engaging in sports at a young age promotes physical activity, which is crucial for children's overall health and development. Soccer, being a physically demanding sport, helps improve cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, coordination, and flexibility.

Motor skills development: Playing soccer involves various gross motor activities, such as running, kicking, dribbling, and passing. These activities enhance a child's motor skills and hand-eye coordination, which can have positive effects on their overall physical development.

Teamwork and cooperation: Soccer is a team sport, and playing it from a young age teaches children the value of teamwork and cooperation. They learn how to work together, communicate effectively, and support their teammates, which are essential skills for success in various aspects of life.

Discipline and focus: Training and playing soccer requires discipline and focus. Young players learn to accept instruction, follow rules, manage their time effectively, and concentrate on their tasks, all of which can translate into improved academic performance and goal-setting abilities.

Boosts self-confidence: As children learn and improve their soccer skills, their self-confidence and self-esteem grow. Accomplishing goals and overcoming challenges on the field can have a positive impact on their self-perception and belief in their abilities.

Social skills: Soccer provides an excellent platform for children to interact with peers. It helps them develop social skills, make friends, and learn to navigate various social situations, fostering social adaptability and empathy.

Healthy competition: Sports introduce children to the concept of healthy competition. They learn how to win and lose gracefully, which helps build resilience and emotional maturity.

It's essential to remember that introducing sports, including soccer, should be done in a fun and supportive manner. The focus should be on fostering a love for the sport and encouraging participation. Ultimately, sports can provide invaluable life lessons that will serve them well throughout their lives.

If you are looking for a fun introduction to soccer, our TinyTykes program is the perfect start to your child’s soccer journey. Search for one of our TinyTykes programs near you here.

Coach Lawrie O’Toole is a Scotland native and a die-hard Celtic FC fan! His entire family has donned the green and white since he was born, so supporting the club was a no-brainer. He’ll never forget watching Celtic FC takedown Barcelona in the Champions League in 2012!

Pablo Barbosa is a first-year coach for Challenger and is already loving his experience with the program! He currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia, where he trains Challenger athletes and also coaches the high school soccer team at Atlanta Girls’ School.

Coach Pablo was born in Brazil and kicked off his soccer career at a young age, playing futsal with his friends. As his love for the sport grew, he joined a club where he could compete at a higher level. The midfielder was a scoring machine – one time scoring 28 goals in just 4 matches!

Pablo went on to play professionally for Guaratinguetá, a Brazilian football club that dissolved in 2017. While he loved his time competing for the Herons, his true love remained Corinthians-Brazil, his favorite professional team since he was a child.

Pablo soon met his wife from Ukraine and together they traveled and lived in over 10 different countries. They currently reside in the United States, supporting their family in Ukraine from afar.

As a coach, Pablo holds 7v7 and 11v11 licenses, and is in the process of finishing his D license course. He loves coaching athletes on field positioning and awareness, and is most looking forward to getting the opportunity to work with Challenger Pro’s Elite Camp athletes.

Coach Alex Nairne has been with the Challenger Sports team for over 4 years now! The Scotland native has been a sports fanatic all his life.  Whether it was playing or watching sports, it was when Alex felt the happiest. That passion ultimately led Alex to pursue a career in coaching.

Alex has been playing soccer for over 20 years. Growing up, he was a member of many youth teams including Livingston FC, where he was teammates with professional Scottish footballer Robert Snodgrass.

During his high school years, Alex started coaching youth players and loved the immediate connection he was able to make with both the kids and their families. To this day, it’s still his favorite part of his career. Alex has formed lasting relationships with his Challenger Sports campers in Rhode Island. Those families have welcomed him into their homes when he is stateside and have even visited him while vacationing in Scotland..

It’s crazy how much of a bond you can develop with people in just a week,” said Alex

Nairne also has a personal way of fostering self confidence in his players, a trait that many youth athletes struggle with today. While developing their skills, he makes sure to communicate and celebrate their areas of strength on and off the pitch. Seeing the athletes improve, become stronger, and come out of their shells is one of the most rewarding feelings for Alex.

In addition to his incredible personality and ‘people skills’, Alex is a qualified and experienced coach on the pitch and is continuously aiming to improve his coaching game. He currently holds a UEFA C qualification and is also a licensed personal trainer. Through his training, he has grown an excellent understanding of youth athletes and how to develop their athletics skills and abilities.

When Alex is not coaching, he enjoys spending time outside hiking, swimming, and golfing. He also likes to catch up on the latest TV shows and movies, and will always make time to tune in to a televised Hearts of Midlothian match. The team has been a favorite of his since they were always a powerhouse in Scotland. Alex still remembers their big 5-1 win over the Hibs in the 2012 Scottish Cup Final.

Our next featured Challenger Sports coach hails from the Democratic Republic of Congo, but currently coaches and resides in Atlanta, Georgia. Coach Merseigne Mutombo comes to Challenger with vast experience as both player and coach. He exhibits all the right traits to motivate and inspire our athletes.

Coach Merseigne has been playing soccer since he was just 5 years old. The former striker competed for his high school team and Atlanta Eagle Academy,  finishing as top scorer for both programs. After graduating from high school, Merseigne continued competing for Buckhead SC in the Atlanta District Amateur Soccer League while earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science.

When he was recently challenged with an injury while on the pitch, Merseigne pivoted to a coaching career to stay involved in the sport he loves so much. In addition to helping athletes develop through Challenger Sports camps, Merseigne coaches the Berkmar High School Varsity Soccer and Atlanta City FC Youth Soccer programs. His favorite part about his job is taking what he’s learned throughout his playing experience and using it to develop  young athletes. Merseigne hopes to become a top professional coach in the future, and we believe he’s on the right track!

Outside of coaching, Merseigne is passionate about traveling, practicing his religion, and cheering on Chelsea FC. He’s been a loyal fan of the club since he was a child and never passes up an opportunity to watch them compete. Just last year, Merseigne traveled to Florida to experience Chelsea’s live training sessions and watch them take on Arsenal in a friendly match.

If you are looking to be trained by some of the best coaches like Merseigne, search for a camp near you here
